An Unveiling of the Heavenly City

This article is an unveiling of the images given in chapters 18 and 19 of The Pilgrimage.  If you have not read that novel, consider doing so before continuing.

The City of the Great Light-Chapter 18

"Oh, my!" I cried in delight.  "How lovely is this place!"

Rachel, after being wounded, dreams of this beautiful city.  This is a picture of heaven.  Everything she sees is beyond belief and beautiful.  She has a sublime sense of peace that can only be found in a heavenly kingdom.  Her senses are filled with sights, sounds and fragrances she has never before experienced.

As Rachel begins to walk in her new surroundings, she realizes she is walking upon a glistening glass surface.

Rev 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. KJV

The ground trembled as she walked; she sees a host of striking white clouds appear on the horizon.  As they get closer, she sees more clearly thousands upon thousands of white Thoroughbred horses.

Rev 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.  KJV

Rachel continues her journey until she reaches a singular grapevine.   Nearly six feet tall, the strong woody vine grew alone propped up by what appeared to be the remains of an old tree.  Its leafy branches like tendrils grew around and were spread about the branches and the trunk.  It flourished and was abundantly filled with large clusters of dark red berries.   The juicy pulp of the globular fruit was rich and sweet and enervating.

The grapevine is an allusion to Christ; it is six feet tall, strong and held up on a tree a symbol of his crucifixion.  It held clusters of dark red berries, symbols of the blood shed on the cross to provide us with new life.  Rachel eats a handful of the berries and feels renewed.

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. KJV

Rachel then continues her journey toward the city of the Great Light.  As she draws closer to the light, she sees a great wall surrounding the city.  She then realizes she has been on a golden highway that led directly to the gate of the city, which was made of translucent pearl.

The wall surrounding the city stretched up into the sky and was comprised of diamond like gems.  They were crystal clear so the city of the Great Light could be seen through it.

Rev 21:19-21 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;

20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.

21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. KJV

As she approaches the immense gate of translucent pearl, which opened inward toward the city, a man stepped out and appeared in front of her and asked her name.

Rev 21:27 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. KJV

As Rachel walks through the city, she sees and approaches a group of magnificent homes that she could tell had not been constructed by human hands; they were too glorious.  They varied in color but each structure was similar in shape, some were denser than others, but all were attractively robed in garments of splendor.  A lamp of prismatic beauty hung delicately in every window.  The rooftops were ornamented with gold and bedecked with jewels.

John 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. KJV

Rev 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; KJV

Rachel was perplexed to see the same name written above the doorway of each home.

Rev 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. KJV

She moves on but then when she looks back, she sees what appear to be the faces of a multitude staring at me--what an enigmatical place!

Finally, Rachel reaches the base of the mountain in the city of the Great Light.  It was surrounded by a magnificent garden.  The picturesque beauty evoked memories of another time and place—it was Paradise.

This is of course an allusion to the Garden of Eden.

A Majestic Throne-Chapter 19

Rachel discovers a garden surrounded by a tall circular fence, which was covered by an assortment of berries all the colors of the rainbow.  They seemed to be hanging on a wall of shimmering emerald green.

Rev 4:3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. KJV

The garden ran around the base of the mountain.  Its design was that of an Elizabethan parterre but from above it resembled the spokes of a wheel.

Ezek 1:16 The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. KJV

Ezek 1:25-28 And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings.

26 And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.

27 And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.

28 As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake. KJV

Rachel then encounters a tree of iceberg roses; a very white variety.  The roses were soft and perfection themselves.  This speaks to the purity of Christ.  Rachel carefully plucks one of the buds and instantly feels an overwhelming love encompass her spirit.

Heb 7:25-28 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. KJV

Rachel spies a lamb and follows him up the mountain.

Rev 5:12-13 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. KJV

She encounters the sound of running water and discovers stream of crystal clear water.  The lamb again in view, she follows.  Above the plateau was a steep promontory, and from here she was able to see the water cascading into the valley below.

Rev 7:17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. KJV

When Rachel stops to drink some water from the brook, she sees her reflection and is surprised at how young and beautiful it seemed.

2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. KJV

She was astonished to find herself dressed in a captivating white gown made of the finest linen with a belt of twisted gold around her waist.

Rev 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; KJV

On top of the mountain she approaches an orchard of fruit trees located on either side of the river than ran down the middle.

Rev 22:1-2  And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. KJV

Rachel stops to eat a piece of fruit but stops after being startled by a bolt of lightning passing by.  She drops the fruit and it falls to the ground.  No one has yet been able to eat from the Tree of Life.

Gen 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. KJV

The bolt of lightning is actually an angel.

Ps 104:4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: KJV

Intrigued, Rachel moves forward past the rows of trees growing by the river's edge until she reached its source.  There she sees a magnificent marble stairway rising high into the sky above.  At the top was a Pillar of Smoke centered on a Golden Throne of Fire, which beamed forth the Great Light; it radiated like the brilliance of a ruby encrusted with diamonds.  The Smoke fell around the Throne like the majestic robe of an Eternal King.

Awestruck, she falls to my knees mystified by the peals of thunder and balls of flaming fire, which streaked forth from the Throne above.

Once again, Rachel sees the Lamb.  She walks up the stairway toward it until she reaches a bridge, linking the temporal structure below with the eternal structure above.  Mysteriously, her mind sees the face of a Man in the bridge. She realizes that the Throne itself was the source of the life-giving river, which flowed freely and abundantly feeding everything beneath.

Jesus is the bridge that links believers to the Father in heaven.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. KJV

Rachel continues to climb higher and begins to hear the voices of a choir singing.

Rev 5:13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. KJV

The Throne was almost within her reach, when Rachel hears a voice calling to her from below.

"Rachel!" It cried.  "Don't leave me."

"Christopher!" I replied, recognizing the voice of my husband.  "Where are you?"

"Rachel!" He called once again.  "I LOVE YOU!"  THE END OF THIS CHAPTER.

I turned and looked around for the face of my beloved.  There, across the bridge in the valley below I saw him, for the first time.  I reached out my hand toward his, we touched, and at once, my spirit rejoined my body, and I woke up.

While no one knows what heaven really looks like, this fanciful vision is based on the Scriptures.
